So called because it "pans" the two Americas, the most that is usually known about this country is that it has a canal. And it's an impressive canal, but apart from that, there isn't much more worth knowing about this land.
Panama City is the oldest city on the western seaboard of the Americas, but now it's a modern and characterless city, apart from an area called Casco Viejo.
This area is full of crumbling charm, unless you wander one street too far, where if you're lucky the locals will warn you of your imminent demise by making pistol against the head signs and telling you to walk the other way. Charming indeed.
