One of the inevitable things about travel photography is taking portraits. I’ll either stand in front of the subject and ask to take their photograph, or I’ll be a little more sneaky and find a way of shooting them unawares.
Asking them is something of a hit and miss affair. Even my most charming efforts sometimes get rejected, usually from their fear of the camera (or me I guess!). Most of the people featured here know that they’ve been photographed and it’s been acknowledged by a thumbs up, a wink, a nod, a wave, a handshake, showing them the photo, or even a cup of tea and a chat with them.
Either way, and whatever the arguments for what the definition of portrait actually are, the photographs in this section are here because their face is the predominant part of the picture.
